From Days to Hours: How Willmeng Construction Achieved 3X Faster Processing

The Challenge

Willmeng Construction, an Arizona-based commercial general contractor, faced a significant challenge: slow processing speeds made it difficult to work with heavy models. “We were working on heavy models for laser scanning and Twinmotion, so we needed heavy computing power,” said Landon Pascua, VDC Director at Willmeng. The team lacked in-house hardware power, which resulted in long processing times and forced them to rely on thirdparty vendors. This disjointed process often caused delays and prevented them from working at the “lightning speed” their projects demanded, leading them to seek an in-house solution to take control of their reality capture and BIM-related work.

Willmeng’s primary goal was to create an in-house reality capture service that allowed them full control of their process. “The major goal was to define and live our process. Our projects move at lightning speed and sometimes calling an external party just isn’t fast enough.”

By building an internal program, Willmeng aimed to empower their teams with data-driven insights and reduce their dependence on third parties.

Solutions

After the challenge was defined in strategic planning, Willmeng Construction kicked off a six-month search, ultimately choosing to partner with ATG. Once the partnership was official, ATG worked to understand Willmeng’s unique needs to find the right solution, not just any solution. With the help of ATG, Willmeng was able to start their program with a strong foundation, acquiring both a BIMBOX Stryker IV computer and a Leica RTC360 laser scanner to begin building their in-house reality capture program.

Shortly after the equipment arrived, Jeff Landers, ATG Reality Capture Specialist, provided on-site training to help Willmeng take full advantage of the RTC360’s capabilities and ensure everything was up and running.

Business Outcomes

The integration of BIMBOX and Leica has had a significant impact on Willmeng Construction’s operations. The team’s processing speeds for files are now three times faster than what they experienced with their previous external partners. “We did the exact same scan that one of our external parties did. They scanned on Monday, and it took them until Thursday to get the data. We scanned it in the morning and had it in our model by that afternoon,” said Landon.

Conclusion

Willmeng Construction’s investment in BIMBOX and Leica has been a clear success. Bringing reality capture services in-house has allowed them to take full control of their project timelines, boosting efficiency and team confidence. “Just give ATG a call,” said Landon. The customer service side has been excellent. I’m not getting beat up with emails, but I’m also getting the followup I need to keep moving forward.
