With everything going on in the world, more companies are implementing voluntary or mandatory remote work policies. As a result, you may be working from home for the first time and encountering new challenges. Never fear though, ATG has your back with some pro tips collected from ATG staffers from across the country

1. Establish Boundaries

  • Keep your family/work separate except on regulated breaks. Don’t let your family dictate your time, especially in meetings.
  • Find a quiet place and only use that place for work. Don’t use that space for browsing the web later. Work when you are in that space and don’t work when you are not.
  • Start your day a little earlier so you can focus 100% on your work.
  • Stay socially connected. Use Slack, Zoom chats, texts etc. The feeling of isolation while working from home is a real thing. Reach out to a coworkers and make time for that chit-chat you would have had if you were still in the office together.

2. Try to Stay Positive at All Times

  • Listen to music and only look at news at a certain time of the day.
  • Take your laptop outside from time to time; ensure that breaks throughout the day involve some sort of physical activity.
  • You are generally happier when you achieve goals- sales, training, bonuses, teamwork. Focus on those items to seek results and when you have results, celebrate them.
  • Take up a new activity that involves physical activity to keep the endorphins flowing. Try ping pong with a friend. It keeps you 8 feet apart at all times and is a good stress reliever.

3. Keep Pets and Kids Busy

  • Lots of chew toys and bonus lunch walks help entertain pets and keeps them from getting restless.
  • Bubbles for kids is a great distraction during the day. You can play with them for hours and it leaves no mess when played with outside.
  • Re-wrap presents enclosed with outfits for your smaller children to try on multiple times. This will make them feel like they’re getting new gifts each week.
  • Allow your kids to play online games with their friends to keep them connected too. They can play battleship via Zoom or Google Meeting. You can check out the best online games to play with friends during quarantine here- https://parade.com/1012420/nicolepajer/best-online-games/.

4. See the Good Outcomes that Come from Remote Working

  • If you commute to work every day, you are now saving time from not sitting on the interstate and busy roads.
  • More outside time and quality time with family is now allotted by walking around neighborhoods as a safe social distancing activity.
  • Sleeping in, cooking at home and playing with your kids and family members all lead to better mental stability.
  • You now have the extra time to learn a new skill, instrument or language. One of ATG’s Technical Specialists is learning the mandolin during his down time.

5. Create a Cool Workspace

  • Look into investing in additional monitors and docking stations so you can work more efficiently. You can also enjoy casting computers to your televisions to enjoy your favorite shows.
  • Organize your workspace and decorate with your favorite posters, trinkets and photos of good memories to stay motivated.

6. Introduce Fun Social Distancing Activities

  • Inspirational quotes and drawings with chalk in driveways and the “teddy bear walk” are good ways to stay engaged while social distancing. The teddy bear walk involves everyone on a block or neighborhood putting a teddy bear in their window and looking for one in each house.
  • Start a large puzzle and reinvigorate your imagination with adult coloring books.
  • Live stream church, small groups and brunches over Zoom or Google Meeting to keep up your relationships with friends and community members.

Quarantine 2020 has been a stressful time for everyone. Trying to stay positive and keeping a good attitude can be challenging at times. Introducing new activities and remembering to have fun are all key to positive mental choices. We hope you can use this time to invest in making memories with your loved ones, while exceeding your own work-life goals and expectations.
