Drones: FAA Approvals and the LAANC Rollout
While planning out a flight, has anyone else filled out the application through the FAA to fly within controlled airspace? If you have, sometimes that process takes at least 90 days for approval. That is a long time within a project lifecycle, especially when you are trying to utilize drone flights to speed up some processes. Never fear, the LAANC Rollout is here! LAANC is the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability. LAANC will enable access to controlled airspace near airports designated by the FAA through approved LAANC UAS Service Suppliers. The following companies are currently approved LAANC UAS Service Suppliers: AirMap, Project Wing, Rockwell Collins and Skyward. So how does this affect me, the drone pilot? Through an approved UAS Service Supplier, drone pilots can receive near real-time airspace authorizations. This will allow us to quickly plan out operations and sometime soon, pilots will be able to provide automatic notification of intended flights to the nearby airports. Here is how that workflow will look: • FAA provides airspace data to the UAS Service Suppliers • UAS Service Suppliers create interactive maps of controlled airspace • Drone Pilot will request digital authorization through the UAS Service Supplier Application • UAS Service Suppliers will send the approved authorization information back to the FAA • Air Traffic Control will use the information to view when and where a scheduled drone flight will take place and in case of an emergency, air traffic control can reach the pilot and ground the drone. -Written by Justin DeVore, ATG AEC Technical Specialist Applied Technology Group is a Platinum Autodesk Business Partner.
